Baby's First ER Visit!

Last night, Callie woke up in the middle of the night crying and wheezing. It was pretty sad. She was making a loud "honking" sound when she would try to breathe in and she was struggling to take deep breaths. She was so tired, but couldn't get back to sleep because she couldn't breathe correctly. We called her pediatrician's on-call number and the nurse there said we should take her in to the ER so they could help her breathe.

By the time we got there, she had improved quite a bit, but she still needed a dose of steroids to help open her airway. It turns out she had croup, which apparently is the most common reason for bringing babies in to the ER in the middle of the night. We had to take Jack, too, because the nurse on the phone said we had to keep a hot, wet washcloth in front of Callie while we drove to the hospital so she could breathe in the moisture. Poor Jack had to be dragged out of bed and driven to the hospital with his sick sister.

It was especially sad for Jack, too, because we had been telling him that as soon as he woke up in the morning, we were going to the Museum of Science to see dinosaurs. As we were putting him in the car in the dead of night, he said, "We're going to the museum!" Um, no, sorry Jack, we're going to the emergency room! At least the nice nurse gave him a popsicle!
