The Fondant Experiment

The other day, I decided I wanted to try my hand at decorating with fondant. I watched several videos online, read blog posts, and found different recipes. I didn't want to invest much money, so I decided to make marshmallow fondant at home. Here's what I managed to create:

I already had the flower cutters, so they were my decoration of choice. These cakes are 6-inches in diameter, by the way. I wanted to start small.

The first cake was made with a boxed cake mix and homemade buttercream frosting.

The kids said it was good, but they weren't huge fans of the buttercream frosting. We usually have chocolate frosting on our cakes whenever possible. Jack didn't really like the texture of the fondant, but said it tasted good.

The second cake I did (the next day), I only had the leftover fondant to work with, so I experimented with coloring. I didn't have any white left, so I just attempted to change the colors I had already made. It's a little odd-looking, but at least I gained some experience with colors!

I also discovered that I don't know how to work with shapes very well! Fondant is pretty soft and stretchy, so it was hard for me to keep my shapes uniform. Maybe my fondant needs to be thicker.

For my second cake, I used chocolate ganache to create a more firm base to smooth the fondant onto. Ganache is just chocolate and cream melted together and whipped up. When it sets, it is much more firm than buttercream frosting. It is also really rich! It was a little too much chocolate for the kids. They were glad to be able to help sample my cakes, but they preferred the cake they were used to. It was a fun experiment, though!
